School and Program Placements
Placing a child in a specialized school or therapeutic program is one of the most difficult decisions a parent can make. Helping a family find the appropriate setting requires both knowledge and compassion on the part of the consultant. Every child and family is unique and their needs are addressed in an individualized manner.
An extensive interview for a complete history begins the process of determining the specific emotional and academic needs of the child. Evaluations are recommended if not recently completed. After a thorough assessment, the level of care is determined, ranging from local (at home) interventions to intensive residential treatment. Options can include therapeutic wilderness programs, emotional growth boarding schools, therapeutic boarding schools and residential treatment centers.
Mary Jane Freeman, the Certified Educational Planner, recommends appropriate schools and programs and acts as a liaison between the family and the school or programs to expedite communication and initial and subsequent placements. (Students placed in a short-term program, such as a wilderness program or an inpatient substance abuse program, often require further planning and placement). Parents are encouraged to visit the recommended programs before arriving at a final decision.
After placement, parents can opt for ongoing communication and monitoring with the program and the consultant as their child progresses through his or her program. Post-program planning may also be included.
